ACDC Unveils Massive North American Tour Dates

AC/DC first formed in "the land down under" more than 30 years ago by Malcolm and Angus Young. The band offered a unique, guitar-heavy hard rock sound for their listeners and after a few years, their music began to catch on with fans in their native Sydney, Australia. In 1975, following an increasing buzz from listeners and a revamped band lineup, AC/DC, who picked up their name from a sewing machine label, released their first album, High Voltage.

Following their debut release, AC/DC has found itself on a steady stream of rock and roll success, releasing more than 20 albums to date, many of which have went on to become multi-platinum sellers. The most widely recognized of these, is 1980’s Back in Black, which has sold more than 42 million copies worldwide, becoming the second highest-selling album of all time. AC/DC have also produced some of the most memorable and widely recognized rock singles of all time over the years. Among these are the ever-popular Highway to Hell, You Shook me All Night Long and Stiff Upper Lip.

On top of their commercial success, AC/DC have garnered a reputation from critics and fans alike, as one of the most influential bands in rock music history. To date, they have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, ranked fourth on VH1’s list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

In October of 2008, the band is set to release their twentieth studio album, entitled Black Ice. To promote and celebrate the upcoming release, AC/DC have announced plans for a massive North American tour, set to hit the Untied States and Canada from late October to mid-December of this year. The tour, which is already selling out fast, is expected to be one of the biggest and highest-grossing of the year. Tickets are hard to get right now.

McDonald's has had the formula down for decades. The product is always the same, no matter the place or time. Customers know exactly what they'll get when they go in the door.

AC/DC has it down, too - a band that has never strayed from its sound or message, much to the delight of fans and puzzlement of rock critics.

After an eight-year absence (that brought the release of live DVDs but no new music), the brothers Young come back as conquering heroes.

Their upcoming tour is sold out (including the Pepsi Center, where the $89 tickets are going for as much as $1,800 each through Ticketmaster's own scalping, er, reselling, service). In an era of great national worry, they offer an escape to a simpler time, when rocking out was all that mattered.

The new album, Black Ice, hits stores today, but only Wal-Mart stores, part of a brilliant and ruthless marketing plan that's going to move a ton of physical units, a feat most of their peers can't do anymore. But AC/DC fans are old-school; watch for this to be one of the biggest sellers of the year.

That's largely because Black Ice delivers yet again. It's not hard to tell what's on their minds, given the song titles: Rock 'n' Roll Train, She Likes Rock 'n' Roll, Rock 'n' Roll Dream, Rocking All the Way. You're not going to find any protest songs here, not even War Machine, a song that, lyrically, makes no sense and takes no stance other than "Kick your foot through the door / Hit the deck, know the score." Stormy May Day explores some slide-blues territory.

The single Rock 'n' Roll Train has a riff that sounds almost more Stones-like than vintage AC/DC. The gentle-starting Rock 'n' Roll Dream comes as close to a ballad as AC/DC will likely ever get.

There's nothing here that's going to get a better response in concert than Highway to Hell or Back in Black once those Gibsons get fired up. That doesn't matter. It'll be one seamless blend of rock as AC/DC storms America this fall.
